Three short lessons about the shape of a paragraph. Move at the class’s pace — each step animates one idea, and you can replay it as often as you like.

1 · Indent

• Steps 1–3 use rows of children. The three groups are invisible until the first row of each group steps back.
• Steps 4–5 do the same thing with real writing. Ask: “Where does the new idea start?”
• An indent is about two fingers wide. Show it on the board with two fingers.

2 · Full lines

• Steps 6–7: lines that start in random places are hard to read. Only the first line is indented; every other line begins at the red wall.
• Steps 8–9: stopping early wastes the paper and chops up the words. Write to the green wall, then sweep back to the red one.

3 · Punctuation

• Steps 10–11: a floating period looks like it belongs to the next sentence. Ending punctuation holds on tight to the last letter.
• Steps 12–13: the other half of the habit — a sentence that ends at the right-hand edge leaves its period stranded at the start of the next line. The rule to say out loud: if the word and its mark will not fit together, take the whole word down to the next line.
